The NEVI (National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) Program, established by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in November 2021, is a grant program that provides $5 billion in strategic funding to states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia to develop a national EV charging network. The funding is allocated to states in increments of $1 billion per year over 5 years with varying levels of funding per state. Deploying this national network along American highways and public roads will enable a frictionless transition to EVs by expanding DC fast charging access.  

The dedicated funding from NEVI will cover up to 80% of eligible project costs for the states, including the costs of acquiring, installing, operating, and maintaining new charging stations as well as upgrading existing charging stations. Once charging infrastructure along a state’s highways is fully built out, the state can propose alternate locations along public roads for new charging installations.  

Federal funding for NEVI is distributed based on a pre-determined formula that considers, among other factors, states’ existing charging infrastructure and population. Requirements for NEVI funding of charging infrastructure are as follows:

• Installed every 50 miles along a highway corridor and goods movement locations, including ports, intermodal centers and warehousing locations
• Capable of simultaneously charging four EVs
• Have a capacity at or above 600 kW total or at least 150 kW per port
• The corridor meets any additional considerations required by the Secretary of Transportation
